Best Golf Swing Takeaway Drills for Your Driver

Today, I want to give you some of my best golf swing takeaway drills for your driver. If you’re struggling with your takeaway, especially with longer clubs like your driver and fairway woods, this video will show you how to start your driver swing correctly on the right plane, with great tempo.

Also, if you haven’t done so already, please make sure to pick up my “Gain 25 Yards” video course. I’ll show you the keys to hitting your drives further and straighter, and it’s yours absolutely free! Just click here for instant access.

The first thing you need to understand about the takeaway is that it’s absolutely critical to keep the golf club “in front of you.” It’s very difficult to hit your driver consistently when you jerk the club away too far to the inside, so these drills are aimed to help you keep the club in front of you or “outside your hands” as you start your takeaway with the driver.

When you watch the video, you’ll see Tiger Woods and Brooks Koepka do this beautifully with their driver takeaway, and it’s one of the reasons they are such elite players.

Here’s an overview of the best golf swing takeaway drills for your driver:

1. Right Hand in Front of the Shaft Drill

This is a great drill that gives you a wonderful sense of exactly what you should be feeling in your takeaway. By gripping the club normally with your left hand, and then placing your right hand in front of the shaft, you eliminate the tendency to jerk your driver too far to the inside during the takeaway.

This drill not only improves your takeaway but also naturally leads to a better pivot in your backswing, another key for driving the golf ball long and straight.

2. The Split Grip Driver Takeaway Drill

Again, the focus of this drill is to prevent you from jerking the club too far to the inside and give you the right feel for your takeaway. All you need to do is take your driver, grip it normally with your top hand, and choke down with your bottom hand so that your hands are 3-4 inches apart.

From this position, if you hinge your wrists too early or swing the club too far to the inside on your driver takeaway, it will be obvious.

3. My “Pocket Laser” Golf Swing Takeaway Drill

This is my favorite drill of the video. If you don’t watch any other part of this video, make sure to watch this drill! During this drill, you want to pretend there is a laser attached to the grip end of your golf club, and when you start your takeaway, the laser should point at your right pocket.

Most players who break their wrists and jerk the club inside do the exact opposite. This is one of my favorite drills for improving your takeaway, so make sure to check it out!

So What’s the Next Step?

I’ve recently put together a FREE 3-part video training series called “Gain 25 Yards” that has already helped thousands of golfers start hitting their driver further and straighter, regardless of age or handicap.

In addition, several Top 100 instructors have told me how great the course is, and that I’m a little crazy to give it away for free, but that’s what I’m doing right now, but only for a limited time!
