If you’re serious about improving your golf swing, posture, and consistency, then golf drills using alignment rods are some of the simplest yet most powerful exercises you can add to your practice routine. Alignment rods not only keep your body in check but also provide instant feedback on areas like posture, balance, early extension, and swing plane.

In this guide, we’ll cover five effective drills demonstrated by Adam Bazalgette, founder of Scratch Golf Academy, that will help you improve your fundamentals and create better habits on the course.

1. Posture and Setup Drill

Good posture is the foundation of a repeatable golf swing. By placing an alignment rod vertically in the ground near your ankle, you can check your hip joint and tricep alignment. This drill helps you feel whether your setup matches the correct golf posture.

2. Bottom-Out Point for Chips and Pitches

Many players struggle with hitting thin golf shots, especially around the green. By setting an alignment rod just behind the ball, you can instantly see whether your swing bottoms out too early. If you strike the rod, it’s a clear signal that adjustments are needed.

3. Head Movement Awareness

Placing an alignment rod tilted near your head creates a visual checkpoint for keeping your head still during the backswing in golf. If your head sways away from the line, you’ll notice it right away. A steady head position promotes a more consistent swing plane.

4. Early Extension Drill

Early extension is a common issue where the body moves toward the ball during the downswing, disrupting contact. To fix this, position an alignment rod behind your hips with a small towel draped over it. During the swing, try to maintain light contact with the towel to avoid thrusting forward.

5. Balance and Weight Shift Drill

Finally, place the alignment rod under your arches while addressing the ball. This forces you to feel balanced at setup. As you swing down, your weight should shift naturally toward your lead heel without excess pressure on your toes or heels. Developing proper balance is key for consistent ball striking.

Why Alignment Rod Drills Matter

Feedback is the fastest way to improve your golf swing. By using alignment rods, you can check multiple areas of your game—posture, ball striking, and swing plane—without expensive equipment.
